A line (or polyline) is measured in length, a polygon is measure in area and a dot is measured in number. Each layer has an offset factor 250 which is discussed elsewhere herein. As I normally have the properties palette open I would select the polyline and then it instantly displays the perimeter and the area on the properties pallete.
